Peter McCaffery (1935-2013)
It is with sadness that we have to announce the death on 2 November 2013 of Peter Gabriel McCaffery (1935-2013), former key member of the Cultural History Group at the University of Aberdeen. Peter was one of the pioneers of Aberdeen’s cultural history undergraduate programme from 1986 and in 2007 was one of the organisers of the ‘Varieties of Cultural History’ conference, from which the International Society for Cultural History (ISCH) developed. It was always one of the aims of the conference to found an international society and this owed much to Peter’s vision and intellectual energy. He served on the provisional committee of the nascent ISCH and has been one of the most regular attenders at ISCH conferences. In 2010 Explorations in Cultural History: Essays for Peter Gabriel McCaffery celebrated his contributions to the field, his boundless enthusiasm and his polymathy. Shortly before his sudden death Peter had completed editing the Cultural History Reader for Routledge and it is this book which represents most clearly his conception of the interdisciplinary nature of cultural history. As recently as September 2013 Peter delivered a keynote address at the ISCH meeting in Istanbul on the present and future relationship of psychology to cultural history. Peter will be greatly missed by friends, colleagues and the generations of students he inspired.
